Astoria – The Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest

The city of Astoria, located where the Columbia River flows into the Pacific Ocean, is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, and home to an outstanding collection of Victorian homes clinging to steep wooded hillsides. Boasting a revitalized 1920s-era downtown and a citizenry committed to restoring its wealth of historic properties, Astoria is one of the key “hubs” of the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Oregon. Notable sites and projects in the area include Fort Clatsop National Memorial, the Astoria Column, the historic Flavel House Museum, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, the Riverfront Trolley that travels along a refurbished Waterfront Walkway, the in-progress restorations of the Liberty Theater and the Hotel Elliott, numerous bed and breakfast and historic inns, and the Peter Iredale shipwreck, visible on the beach at Fort Stevens State Park.
