Lillian Pitt Designs Pin to Commemorate
Lewis & Clark
Bicentennial in Oregon
Internationally-recognized
Portland artist, Lillian Pitt, has designed a pin in honor of the
bicentennial of Lewis and Clark’s journey through Oregon. Pitt,
of the Warm Springs and Yakama Tribes, created the image of the mythical
Stick Indian in the center of the oblong pin, surrounded by the words “Lewis & Clark
Bicentennial in Oregon” and the years of the expedition.
The Stick Indian, which is depicted with pursed lips, is a Columbia
River Plateau tribal tradition called the “Little People” or “Unknown
People” in the Ichishkiin language. Traditional stories place
Stick Indians in the mountains, where they help lost hunters by whistling
to lead them to safety. Always present, the Stick Indians look upon
the activities of the tribe, reminding people to honor native traditions
and maintain a favorable relationship with nature.
Design and production of the pin is sponsored
by Tuality Healthcare, a non-profit community hospital serving
Washington County. All proceeds from the sale of the pin will benefit
the programs of Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Oregon (LCBO).
LCBO is a nonprofit organization dedicated to coordinating Oregon’s
commemoration of the Corps of Discovery’s
journey through Oregon two hundred years ago.

This is the official lapel pin produced
by Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Oregon (LCBO) to commemorate
activities and legacy projects throughout the state. The pin
is based on a bronze mask designed by Warm Springs artist,
Lillian Pitt entitled Warm Springs Stick Indian.
